Toronto General Hospital is a university hospital and has more than 400 beds. It provides secondary and tertiary care in Toronto, Canada and has gained a global reputation for its transplant and cardio-thoracic programs. It’s also the only hospital in the area to provide Extracorporeal Life Support for cardiopulmonary failure.

The hospital’s organ transplant program is ranked as the largest in the country. Over 500 transplants are done annually. Once the process is complete, a multidisciplinary team follows the recipients. Its Medical-Surgical ICU has 24 beds and has experts who specialize in post-transplant care and cardiac failure.

It also comprises a Coronary and Cardio-Vascular Intensive Care Unit specializing in primary cardiac pathologies and post-cardiac surgery patients. It’s regarded as one of the modern health facilities, and the local community has numerous reasons to be proud of it.

Some of its core values include safety, compassion, teamwork, and integrity. Dr. Kevin Smith was appointed as the CEO and President of University Health Network in early 2018. Brain Porter, the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the organization, made the announcement.

The medical professional was the President and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health System at the time. Mr. Porter welcomed him and said that everyone on the Board of Trustees was delighted to have him as the head of the organization. He also noted that he was the perfect candidate for the position due to his vast experience in the local healthcare industry.

The Chair of the Board was optimistic that the new CEO would facilitate building strong relationships with various partners in the community. He also thanked Dr. Smith for accepting the appointment. The CEO is known for his numerous contributions to the local and national healthcare industry.

Besides his position at the hospital, the medical expert is a special advisor to the Minister of Health and the Chair of the Council of Academic Hospitals in Ontario. He has held other senior managerial roles in the past, including the chair of the Ontario Hospital Association.

The CEO believes in continuous learning and has an exemplary academic background. Earlier in his life, he studied at the University of Sussex and holds a Doctor of Philosophy. Dr. Smith expressed his excitement after the appointment to lead the University Health Network as the President and CEO.

According to him, Toronto General Hospital is an internationally-recognized medical facility for quality healthcare and its involvement in medical research. He also said that he was excited to do his work and help the organization achieve its objective of being an industry leader and improving customer service.

Quality Improvement Plan

The plan is part of the local government’s efforts to streamline service delivery and help hospitals meet the community’s expectations on quality and accountability. The plan is one of the tools the organization has been using to document and review performance in different departments. It enables Toronto General Hospital and other subsidiaries to identify targeted areas for improvement and determine how to progress and create a positive patient experience.
