Canada Is Tightening Border Restrictions

People Are Encouraged to Cancel Travel Plans

Minnesota businesses were looking forward to doing business with Canada. However, they will likely have to wait a while before they are able to do that. Canada has had its borders closed for the past 11 months due to Covid. Foreign people are not permitted to come unless they are coming for a reason that has been deemed essential.

Bill Blair is the Minister of Public Safety. He encouraged people to cancel non-essential travel plans. He said that keeping everyone safe is the number one priority right now. People in Minnesota have been waiting for the border restrictions to loosen. However, Canadian officials have not budged on this issue.

Americans Respond to Travel Restrictions

Michelle Fischback and Pete Stauber are two Republican Senators who have been calling on President Biden to lift the travel restrictions. They have also teamed up with other congress members to request the same thing. Additionally, they want President Biden to establish a plan for safely lifting the restrictions.

Pete released a statement saying that they have been listening to people who have had their livelihoods destroyed because they depended on the U.S. Canada border for business. He also stated that he has talked to people in Minnesota who have not been able to visit their own property due to the travel restrictions.

Border Restrictions Take a Toll on People

Joe Henry is the director of Lake of the Woods Tourism. He said that the Northwest Resorts are struggling due to the pandemic. Pete stated that he is disappointed with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He said that the relationship between the border benefits both the Canadians and Minnesotans. He also stated that Canadians are just as hurt by the border closures as Minnesotans are.

Patty Hadju is the Health Minister. She stated that an increase in spread could create major problems for everyone. Anyone who flies into Canada will have to take a Covid 19 test. They will also have to quarantine for three days in a hotel. Additionally, some people may be required to quarantine for 14 days.

People who are driving to Canada will have to present a negative Covid 19 test upon arrival. Anyone who refuses may be denied entry or fined.
