In February 2021, Mr. Musk sent a tweet bashing nickel for being expensive and scarce. In that tweet, Mr. Musk hinted Tesla plans to replace nickel batteries with batteries that use iron instead of nickel.
Mr. Musk knows the electric vehicle industry is the future of the automotive industry. He wants to have enough raw materials on hand to produce electric vehicle batteries capable of traveling more than 600 miles without a recharge.
Better-Grade Nickel Mining In Canada Is On An Australian Miner’s Radar
Nickel is a vital component in the quest to produce batteries with more energy. Using nickel reduces the amount of cobalt used to produce these super-charged lithium-ion batteries.
Australia, Brazil, Russia, China, Switzerland are the top nickel-mining countries. But Canada has large nickel deposits between its borders too. Australian-based metal miner Wyloo wants to up its investment in Canada’s Noront Resources, a copper and nickel mining company. Wyloo has a 23% stake in Noront Resources. But Wyloo, a division of the Tattarang Investment group, wants to buy all the outstanding shares of Noront. Wyloo offered to buy those shares for $110 million.
According to a Noront spokesperson, the Wyloo offer is only a verbal offer. Noront wants a written offer from the Tattarang Investment group. Wyloo claims Noront Resources is a good investment thanks to Canada’s Ring of Fire region north of Toronto.
The Noront Mineral Deposit Is Canada’s Latest High-Quality Nickel Discovery
Wyloo CEO Luca Giacovazzi believes Canada is the next big better-grade nickel producer. Thanks to the demand for lithium-ion batteries for vehicles and other electronic devices, Canada’s Noront Resources has an opportunity to increase Canada’s Gross Domestic Product growth. And the country will play an important role in revolutionizing the automotive industry.
The area of Canada that holds the most nickel mining potential is the Ring of Fire cluster of nickel, copper, and other minerals sitting below the surface 1,000 miles north of Toronto. Wyloo also plans to form a joint venture agreement with Orford Mining, another Canadian company. Orford mining operates a nickel-producing project in Quebec.
According to Luca Giacovazzi, Wyloo wants to strengthen the metal and mineral supply chain in Canada. The Wyloo CEO told the press the company plans to open a ferrochromium plant in Canada in order to confirm its commitment to develop better-grade nickel for the booming electric vehicle market.
