Canada is a great country that has been at the forefront of technological innovation. From the first telephone to satellite technology, Canada has played an important role in shaping our modern world. With so many brilliant minds and such valuable resources, it’s no wonder that Canadians have contributed so much to our global society! Here are just some of the ways Canadian inventions have changed history:
Graphical User Interface (GUI) & Operating System: Most users of Apple computers or smartphones interact with a Graphical user interface, which allows the user to use images rather than text commands to direct the computer’s functions. The technology was developed at the University of Toronto by Dr. Ben Lickly and his team in the early 80s.
The telephone: The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876 while he was living in Brantford, Ontario. He is also credited with inventing the first crude metal detector!
Satellite Technology: Canadian engineers played a major role in developing satellite technology, which has allowed the world to enjoy satellite TV, GPS systems, and even weather reports.
Iron Ore Cleaning Process: The first-ever process for extracting iron ore from large amounts of rock was developed by Dr. Wilfrid B. Lavallée in 1922. His technology is still used by mining companies around the world!
The Telephone: Alexander Graham Bell, a professor at the University of Toronto, invented the telephone in Brantford, Ontario. We wonder what he would think if he knew that Canada no longer had its own telephone number! Speaking on the phone is an American tradition now…
Ph.D.: Canada was one of two countries in the world (the other was the United States) that had a bachelor’s degree as its minimum requirement for university entrance in 1901. To be accepted, students only needed to complete an exam in their chosen field; they did not need to attend high school first. Canada was also one of the first countries to create a Ph.D. program.
Penicillin: In 1928, Dr. Fleming discovered the antibiotic penicillin while he was working at St. Mary’s Hospital in London, Ontario. It has saved countless lives and is still used today!
Insulin: In 1922, Dr. Frederick Banting and his team at the University of Toronto developed insulin, which has saved the lives of countless diabetics.
Molson Beer: John Molson created Canada’s first successful commercial brewery in 1786 after he returned from Europe where he was introduced to beer-making techniques. The company is now one of the biggest beer manufacturers in North America!
