Growing Cannabis Trends in Canada

Growing Cannabis Trends in Canada

The recent legalization of cannabis in Canada has lead to major changes the business markets. However, there are varying opinions as to how cannabis will be popularized in the future. There are a few trends that are currently being noticed and studied about the cannabis industry.

Increasing Support for Cannabis Businesses

There is growing support for cannabis businesses in the U.S. and Canada. The American Trade Association for Cannabis and Hemp and The Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s International Cannabis Council have signed an agreement to provide financial support for businesses working to expand on the growing cannabis industry.

The agreement outlines the fact that the future growth of cannabis depends greatly on the U.S. and Canadian markets. As the legalization of marijuana use continues, the leaders of both organizations hope to build strong economic relationships between the U.S. and Canada. The next plan is to set up a meeting with congressional cannabis caucuses and discuss various topics that concern the global cannabis industry.

Medical and Recreational Uses of Cannabis

Marijuana has earned both good and bad reputations in North America. Before legalization, it was used as an illegal, recreational drug. After legalization, it has become more commonly known as medical marijuana. Currently, this substance is universally legal for its benefits in medicine. It is becoming a popular method of treating common ailments.

Canada was the second country in the world to legalize the sale, possession and consumption of cannabis after passing the Cannabis Act in 2018. Many regions that have voted for legalization have various restrictions. Some residents are limited to the quantities of marijuana that they possess and are required to carry ID cards.

The recreational use of cannabis is legal yet heavily regulated by the Canadian government. While cannabis possession is no longer illegal under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, there are tax and criminal usage laws that apply. For instance, cannabis is not allowed to be sold to minors or used while operating a motor vehicle.

The Popularity of Cannabis Businesses in Canada

Since 2018, online sales and purchases of recreational cannabis are in effect. Most provinces permit the operations of stores that sell the substance privately or through the government. However, most Canadians should not expect a sharp rise in the number of stores. The number of sellers is expected to remain restricted due to legal limitations and a reduced supply of cannabis from producers.

By the end of 2019, cannabis sales only topped C$520 million when C$4 billion was predicted. These sales reflected the reduced number of stores that operated in major cities across Canada. In addition, the legal cost of cannabis products exceeded that of products sold on the black market. There were restrictions in the types of products that were being sold, as well; however, in 2020, more stores are providing wider selections.

Marijuana has been used as a worldwide medical remedy for centuries. In the 20th century, it was vilified as a dangerous, destructive weed that only has recreational uses. Now in the early 21st century, more people are seeing cannabis as a useful medicinal plant that should be legalized and used freely by professionals and non-professionals. Since its recent legalization, researchers should continue to study the growing trends that will evolve quickly over the next few years.
