Bell and Amazon Team Up

Bell Canada recently announced it is partnering with Amazon Web Services to provide 5G wireless capabilities to its customers. Bell Canada gains access to Amazon’s cloud-computer infrastructure that will help it offer new technologies such as AR gaming, autonomous vehicles and smart manufacturing. Amazon won Bell Canada’s business over other technology giants Microsoft and Google.

Amazon will locate a new cloud-computing and cloud-storing facility next to where Bell’s 5G network is situated. This will increase internet speed as the data doesn’t have to travel far. Senior Vice President of Bell Business Markets Jeremy Wubs said it’s like having a really fast freeway next to your home. Lag time will be reduced, which is critical for emerging technologies like autonomous cars and remote surgery.

Mphasis Launches Canadian Headquarters

Mphasis is a global technology firm in India. It recently announced it is establishing a headquarters in Calgary, Alberta. There will be up to 1,000 jobs created. Mphasis has a partnership with the University of Calgary and the Alberta government. This partnership will establish the Quantum City Centre of Excellence. It will serve as a hub for quantum technologies.

University of Calgary President Ed McCauley said the centre will help the city’s economy grow and diversify. He said it’s a great day for the university as the partnership is how research universities help their communities. The university has a respected quantum computing lab that is working on projects like clean tech, energy, logistics and financial services.

Twitter Blue Launches in Canada and Australia

Twitter Blue is a subscription service that is launching in Canada and Australia. It adds features to Twitter like undoing tweets, reader mode and bookmarks. The launch will provide information on what features users are looking for. The free version of the service will remain.

Twitter released a statement that said users said they want power features that aren’t currently available. It used this feedback to develop solutions, including features and perks that make the service easier to use. Twitter Blue costs C$3.49 a month and AUD$4.49 a month. The service is expected to cost $2.99 a month when it launches in the United States.
