Canada Plans for Zero Emissions

Canada Plans for Zero Emissions

Canada’s Concern for the Environment

Preserving the environment is among Canada’s current concerns. With the warming of the Arctic, Canadians are anxious about the impacts that climate change will affect. To achieve net-zero emissions, Canada needs engagement and support from the businesses, citizens, and indigenous people in the provinces and territories. With this goal in mind, the proposed Canadian Net-Zero Emission Accountability Act would set up an advisory body for the country’s government to design the plans for net-zero emissions by 2050.

Along with setting five-year milestone targets, in its commitment to reduce emissions, Canada has passed legislation requiring specific reduction plans for each milestone target, along with published interim and final reports about the results. Canada’s government will publish the first plan mandated under this recent legislation, creating a plan to surpass Canada’s 2030 climate goal. Although the Keystone XL pipeline proposal was rejected by U.S. President Barack Obama, President Donald Trump was able to revive this plan of action. However, not long afterward, Joe Biden, former Vice-President to Mr. Obama, became President of the U.S. and nixed this plan again.

Net Zero Emissions

Canada joins more than 120 countries in their pledge to have zero emissions by 2050. Other G7 nations such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and hundreds of cities worldwide that include the Canadian cities of Halifax, Guelph, Hamilton, Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal have joined this pledge. Canada’s recent actions on climate have the country able to produce the largest reduction of emissions in its history. But, to avoid the drastic effects of climate change, Canada must move to a net-zero economy by the target year of 2050. For Canada to have no emissions, it will need the assistance of all its provinces and territories and other countries. The Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act will greatly aid the country as it will set up an independent advisory body. The advisory body will provide advice to the government as Canada marks its way to net-zero by 2020.

This path to net-zero will act as protection for the environment while growing the economy. As investors and the government seek cleaner products, they will continue to work to ensure that Canada creates good jobs that attract investments and create good jobs and real, future opportunities in a globally competitive economy.
