Psychedelic Mushrooms Can Now Be Used
A small percentage of health officials in Canada will now be able to use psychedelic mushrooms. Patty Hadju is the Minister of Health. She stated that health care workers can now apply to use psilocybin mushrooms. There are many therapists who have requested for their patients to use psychedelic mushrooms as a part of their therapy. However, Patty did not say whether therapists themselves will be able to use the psychedelic mushrooms for themselves.
Patty recently meet with a member of the House of Commons last week. She stated that national regulators granted the therapists’ request to use psychedelic mushrooms last week. She stated that she is happy that Health Canada granted the request. Patty said that while the move is controversial, she believes that it will be able to help the people who are struggling.
Patty stated that this exemption will allow health care workers to get around the country’s control substances laws. The health minister is also pushing for more psychedelic drugs to be used for religious and therapeutic substances. In August, Health Canada approved psilocybin mushrooms for cancer patients who are nearing the end of their lives.
Patty said that this is exciting for patients who are interested in using this type of therapy.
Who Has Been Advocating for Psychedelic Mushroom Use?
TheraPsil is a non-profit organization that has advocated for the use of psychedelic mushrooms. The group has managed to apply for psychedelic mushrooms usage for several patients who are in end-of-life care. They have also applied for psychedelic mushroom use for patients who have experienced trauma.
Spencer Hawkswell is the CEO of the group. He stated that he is grateful for Patty Hadju, who is the Health Minister. He also said that there needs to be training for health care workers who plan on using psychedelic mushrooms.
TheraPsil stated that 17 health care workers have applied for an exemption. They plan on raising 250,000 for the program. Spencer also said that therapists need to know about the effects of the drug before they administer it.
Some people have expressed concerns about the legislation of psychedelic mushrooms. Dr. Sean O’ Sullivan is an emergency room physician. He is also a member of TheraPsil Board of Directors. He stated that it is important for therapists to understand what they are getting into.
