Keanu Reeves’s Hilarious Past Catches Up with Him
Although many are familiar with actor Keanu Reeves’s film career, there is often a misperception that the John Wick star is American. But as many Canadians know, the movie legend is actually a Toronto native. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Reeves made Toronto his home as a young child. It was in the Canadian province that he first cut his teeth as an actor, starring in local theater productions and taking other small gigs. When he was around 20 years old, the actor took a job working with the CBC as a correspondent. It was in this capacity that the budding thespian went to a teddy bear convention and reported on it. Once again, Reeves’s antics caused him to go viral this week.
Five Years Before Making His Grand Debut as Ted
In the now viral CBC video, audiences can glimpse the beginnings of Reeves’s signature moves. Goofy and charming, the aspiring movie star prowls the floor of the teddy bear convention asking eccentric questions and getting to know the attendees. It’s easy to see why the young actor quickly developed such a beloved reputation in the entertainment industry. Although acting jobs were definitely less plentiful in Canada than they were in Hollywood, young Keanu made the most of all the opportunities he received. Honing his acting chops, he worked on movies that were made for TV and even managed to get cast in a Rob Lowe film that was shooting nearby. This hockey movie, Youngblood, allowed Reeves to show off his sporting skills. Like many young Canadian men, the actor had developed a strong affinity for the game. Taking on the role of Heaver, Reeves proved that he had what it takes to make it onto the silver screen.
From Toronto to Hollywood
Just a few short years after shooting the CBC teddy bear clips that would become viral decades later, Canadian Keanu made the big move across the border. Of course, the rest is history. But along the way, he would never forget his roots. In 1995, craving a way to expand himself as an actor, Reeves agreed to play Shakespeare’s Hamlet at the Manitoba Theatre Centre, located in Winnipeg. Although not many had associated Reeves with the Bard prior to this engagement, audiences became quite fond of Keanu’s portrayal of the classic role. Reeves was mainly thought of as an action star at the time, but his Hamlet managed to sell out the theater every single night. If the past is any indication, this movie star will continue to bring attention and recognition to Canada.
