In December 2018, Canadian police officers arrested Meng Wanzhou at the Vancouver airport. Wanzhou is Huawei’s chief financial officer. Meng is also Ren Zhengfei’s daughter. Zhengfei is the CEO of Huawei and the company’s founder.
Canada Arrested Meng Based On Information From The Trump Administration
According to Canadian officials, Meng allegedly violated Irian sanctions when she put a financial deal together with a Brazilian subsidiary in order to do business in Iran. In 2018, Mr. the tariff and trade war with China was in full bloom. Trump wanted Canada to send Wanzhou to the U.S. to stand trial for the sanction violations. Trump wanted to use Meng as a bargaining chip, according to the New York Times.
Canada tried to justify Meng’s arrest with the Chinese government. But the Chinese arrested two Canadians living in China for threatening national security right after Meng’s arrest. Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig are still in custody in China. And it appears they will remain in Chinese custody until Canada releases Wanzhou instead of sending her to the U.S.
Huawei’s Canadian Vice President Morgan Elliott Condemned The Detention Of Wanzhou
Morgan Elliot, Huawei’s Canadian VP, condemned the arbitrary detention of Meng Wanzhou. Elliott claims Canada acted on behalf of the United States when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested Meng. Elliott claims her arrest was a political act.
During a West Block interview, Elliott sidestepped the interviewer’s question. The interviewer asked Elliott if he condemned the arbitrary detention of Spavor and Kovrig too. But Mr. Elliot did not answer her questions in a way that made sense to the interviewer and her audience.
Canada’s extradition policy with the United States may force Canada to send Wanzhou to the U.S. to stand trial. A Canadian judge should rule on the Wanzhou case in April, according to several news reports.
The Biden Administration Will Let A Canadian Judge Make The Meng Extradition Decision.
The Biden administration did not publically mention the Meng Wanzhou situation. But during a telephone conversation with China’s President Xi, Biden talked about the trade and tariff issues. But Meng’s legal fate is still in the hands of a Canadian judge.
If the judge’s ruling sends Wanzhou to the U.S., Spavor and Kovrig could face a Chinese legal system with a 99% conviction rate. The Chinese have no evidence, but that doesn’t stop the Chinese government from enforcing their form of justice.
