The Canadian Tech Scene

The Canadian tech scene is one of the most exciting in the world. We have some of the top minds in hardware, software and AI working here. And while Canada has long been a major player in fields like mining, oil and gas, forestry or construction equipment manufacturing, we’ve seen an explosion in growth for startups across virtually every industry.

1. Shopify

Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. In 2015 it reported that its software was used by approximately 400,000 businesses worldwide, and as of 2017, there were more than 500 employees at Shopify’s headquarters.

2. Thalmic Labs

Thalmic is a manufacturer of wearable technology products based in Kitchener, Ontario. The company’s first product was the MYO armband, which allows users to control electronic devices by moving their hands and fingers.

3. Kik

Kik is a freeware instant messaging mobile app from the Canadian company Kik Interactive, available free of charge on iOS and Android operating systems. It uses a smartphone’s data plan or Wi-Fi to transmit and receive messages, photos, videos, sketches, mobile web pages, documents such as PDF files (which can be viewed inline), contacts, and location.

4. Maluuba

Maluuba is a Canadian artificial intelligence company developing advanced natural language understanding technologies to solve complex problems such as search and discovery, voice assistants, automated customer service agents and in-car navigation systems. Maluuba’s core research team of 30 people is based at the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA) lab at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

5. Deep Genomics

Deep Genomics is a Canadian company that uses deep learning to study the genetic causes of disease. It was founded in 2015 by Brendan Frey, who serves as CEO and scientific advisor Geoffrey Hinton who serves as Chief Scientific Advisor. Deep Genomics raised $21 million in their Series A funding round.

6. Integrate

Integrate is a technology company that offers cloud-based ecommerce services for retailers and manufacturers. The company helps its clients with marketing, selling and shipping products. It was founded in 2009 by Alexei Beltyukov and Yaroslav Lobaev, who serve as CEO and CTO, respectively. Integrate has 260 employees across Canada, US, UK and Asia.

To sum it up, the Canadian tech scene is full of exciting opportunities, and we’re sure to see more successes as time goes on.
