Surplus Food Security Program solves Canada’s Food Insecurity.
Canadians in some parts of the country are facing food insecurity due to the pandemic. Leaders in different states have come together to help the Canadians through Surplus Rescue Food Program. In a public statement made by the leaders, the program will ensure that the needy citizens get fish and seafood. It intends to spend $15.5 million for the products to get produced. A partnership has to take place for the operation to succeed. In a partnership between Clearwater Seafoods and Membertou First Nation, there will be a donation of $1.4 million.
The money will get used to buying 150,000 pounds of scallops. The scallops will be given out to residents of Atlantic Canada. Green seafood will also get donations to help in the purchase and distribution of frozen mussels to be distributed to the community at Nova Scotia. To avoid food waste, they will work with the Innovative Surplus Food Rescue Program. Their main focus is on ensuring no food goes to waste by repurposing and redistributing food in all sectors such as fish and horticulture.
Since the hotel industry was the most affected by the pandemic, producers have something sustaining them through such programs. In total, eight organizations will be part of the distribution process through charity organizations. All parts with vulnerable families in the country will get fish and seafood to help them during the pandemic. The community in Nova Scotia has learned to live and share the small they have with the less fortunate.
The federal government has gotten involved to help programs purchase and provide food to those lacking. The fish farmers benefit from such programs since they harvest fish and ensure they get to those who deserve them. Nova Scotia is famous for the production of seafood consumed by people in different parts of the world. Families will, therefore, get nutritious foods through such programs.
