Dawn Farrell, the woman who has driven the potential for female entrepreneurs and leaders, will retire from TransAlta’s leadership at the end of March. The company announced that Farrell, 61, and one of the longest female chief executives in Alberta’s energy sector, will step down for John Kousinioris, the current chief operating officer and President of TransAlta Renewables.
Who is Dawn Farrell?
Dawn Farrell is a household name in Alberta’s energy sector has held a dozen senior management positions in organizations like BC Hydro, TransAlta Corp, Chemours Company, New Relationship Trust Fund, Fording Coal Income Fund, and Quest Windelectric.

The astute chief executive made outstanding contributions in the formation of TransAlta’s Wind and Renewables segment by initiating the acquisition of Canadian Hydro Developers Inc. and Vision Quest Windelectric.
The acquisition catapulted TransAlta’s position as Canada’s top independent renewable power business.
At one time, the chief executive explained that she was proud that TransAlta had faced the challenges in the industry and had “been able to accomplish a momentous multi-year transformation: from a primarily Alberta-based, coal-fired electricity company into a leading clean and renewables-focused electricity company spanning three countries.”
Renewable Energy Fervor
To date, TransAlta has committed about $1 billion worth of financial investments to the noble course of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in its Alberta-based operations. Farrell revealed in a recent interview that she was confident that TransAlta was on track to stay committed to the objective of reducing its levels of carbon emissions by over 70% by the close of 2022.
John Dielwart, TransAlta’s board chair, noted that the company would remember Farrell for taking a central position through the final phase of deregulating electricity, particularly in Alberta, through the Alberta Climate Leadership Plan. Similarly, Derrell maintained a strong stand in adjusting the strategy to act on carbon emission regulations’ shifts.

Todd Stack will take the mantle in replacement of Kousinioris as the president of TransAlta Renewables while continuing to deliver in his current position as TransAlta’s chief financial officer.
