EA Buys Metalhead, Creator Of Super Mega Baseball

Metalhead, a developer based in Victoria, B.C., Canada, has been acquired by Electronic Arts. EA made the announcement and revealed that the team will be making baseball games for its EA SPORTS line. Metalhead is responsible for bringing gamers the Super Mega Baseball series, which has been praised by fans and critics.

EA Comments On Purchasing Metalhead Software

In a press release, EA Sports EVP and General Manager, Cam Weber, said that the unique offerings of Metalhead will bring a new edge to the company. Weber also said that everyone on the EA Sports team has played Super Mega Baseball over the years and they are big fans.

Metalhead Speaks On Aquisition

The co-founder of Metalhead Software, Scott Drader, chimed in saying that the EA acquisition will allow the developer’s work to be showcased in front of a wider audience. On top of that, there will be a higher budget to further push innovation with Metalhead’s future projects.

EA’s Return To Baseball

EA Sports has been out of the baseball game scene since 2006. This was due to an exclusive deal between Take-Two Interactive and the MLB, which saw Take-Two as the exclusive third-party company of the MLB. Over the years, however, it has been Sony who has dominated the baseball video game space with its MLB The Show series. Its latest title, MLB The Show ’21 marked the first time a game in the franchise was playable on a system outside of the PlayStation brand.

The Love For Canada Continues

For EA, the move to purchase Metalhead probably doesn’t come as a big surprise. After all, EA is quite comfortable in Canada. The EA Vancouver development studio has produced some of EA’s highest-selling titles such as the FIFA series. One can’t forget about developers such as BioWare, which is based in Edmonton, Alberta. EA acquired BioWare back in 2007.

EA also developed a new studio in Vancouver, Full Circle. The studio has been put in place for the development of the highly-requested Skate 4. A former lead for Microsoft’s Xbox Live service, Daniel McCulloch, is now the General Manager for Full Circle. EA had several positions available for the studio at the beginning of 2021.
