The passengers must pay up to $2000 upkeep expenses for the three days, which most people find unnecessary and expensive in these tough economic times.
Those entering Canada by land can quarantine themselves at home. As such, witty travelers use direct flights to U.S. cities near the Canadian borders, such as New York and Buffalo. From there, they hire vehicles to get them across the border. Since the new rule was put in place, the transport services near the border are experiencing double profits. Carla Boccio shares that commuters are evading the mandatory hotel quarantine because it feels like one is in jail. Commuters pay about $100 to get into Canada by land, and at an added fee, they can be taken to their final destinations.
A move to curb the spread of new coronavirus variants
The federal government introduced the strict rule in February where air passengers must get a mandatory covid-19 test once they get in Canada. Also, the passengers must quarantine themselves for three days in a hotel as they wait for test results and then quarantine at home for 11 days. The new rule in Ottawa is meant to discourage passengers from traveling abroad, which reduces the importation of new contagious Covid-19 variants.
